Probably more function rather than artistic license....but we'll never know, all the engineers involved are probably no longer with us. Wouldn't surprise me if it even turned out to be a common design team member involved. Hey it was the 70's, man!

I suspect the idea originally was to look like an Altec horn. When JBL and Community radials got hot they just cut out the ribs to look more like their horns.
